This tutorial explains how you can protect a directory in your domain with a user name and password so that only authorized persons will have access to it. You have the option to assign as many different users and passwords as you wish. It is worth noting that it is not possible to protect individual files in your domain. However, all files placed inside a password protected directory are protected. In other words, all files placed inside the password protected directory are not accessible by general public and can only be accessed by those who have the correct username and password.

How to Password Protect a Directory

To ensure that only authorized personnel have access to some directories in your account, you can password protect a directory as follows:
  • Log in to your control panel as usual at www.YourDomain.com/cpanel

  • In the control panel, click on the Password Protect Directories icon.

  • You will be presented with a screen with the message:
"Please select the folder you wish to protect by clicking on its name.
Open a folder by clicking on its icon." And you will see all the directories (folders) in your domain. Note that each directory has an icon and a name associated with it. The message above that I have enclosed in quotes means that if you want to password protect a directory, you click on its name but if you want to navigate because you only want to password protect a sub-directory, then click on its icon and navigate to the desired sub-directory.

  • Once you have reached the directory or sub directory you want to password protect, click on the directory name and you will be taken to password protect options screen.

  • Now make check mark by clicking on the square next to the lock where it says Directory requires a password to access via the web. You must check this square box to activate password protection of your directory.

  • Optionally you can give the Protected Resource (directory) a name but it is not necessary.

  • Add users who will have access to this directory by assigning user names and passwords and clicking on Add/Modify authorized user for each user. You can add as many users with different user names and passwords as you wish. Here you can also delete any users that no longer are authorized to access this directory. You also have the option to change user names and passwords of existing users.

  • Now click on the Save button to activate your addtions, changes or modifications etc. That's it, you are done! From now on, only authorized users using the correct user name and password assigned to them will be able to access this directory from the web.

  • You can repeat the above procedure for as many directories and sub-directories in your domain as you wish to protect with a password.
